CRUMBS Cafe Radio Show and Podcast

Quick Jump to an Episode

Season 7
CRUMBS Cafe is a radio show where we have local musicians stop by the CRUMBS studio for an interview and usually an acoustic set. Often we get the chance to record rare, acoustic versions of your favorite local songs.

This gives musicians the opportunity to chat a bit about who they are, what their songs are all about, or even the local music scene in general. Shows tend to run about 30 minutes with the musician playing three songs live in the CRUMBS Cafe studio.

The freshest and hottest band to hit the Capital Region in years, The Ill Funk Ensemble is like no other in the area. In an area awash with mediocre rock groups and generic party band, The Ill Funk Ensemble sets itself apart by doing what few are doing outside of LA or NYC: creating a LIVE R&B and hip-hop and soul experience. Fronted by Albany's premier soul/hip-hop artist, Jermaine Wells, and backed by some of the best musicians the area has to offer, Ill Funk performs music made famous by the Jackson 5, Jay-Z, Stevie Wonder, and The Roots, among many others, as well as playing original music from their debut album, Catching Wreck. Combined, the five members of the band have over 80 years performance experience, are accomplished in jazz, rock, funk, classical and hip-hop and have shared the stage with Tower of Power, Young MC and The Fabulous Thunderbirds. With a combination of style, grace and professionalism that is rare in today's music industry, Ill Funk takes pride in their ability to appeal to an audience of any range, while providing a top-notch stage show and an authentic R&B and Hip-Hop experience that will leave your clients and customers talking about the show long after they leave. Perfect for any size venue, whether it be a large outdoor stage, or a small private club, The Ill Funk Ensemble will get people up singing along and packing the dance floor!

Cuttlebone - SOSA
This song was the top song of the week on CRUMBS Radio voted by you the listener. It earned a spot on this episode.

Raised in New York City, John began playing Subway stations and bars in and around Manhattan in his early twenties. His songwriting has evolved over the past 15 years from intimate walks through the blue-black city streets and bar-rooms of New York City, to autumn brown country roads paved with gratitude. John has a loyal grass-roots fan base and continuously tours throughout the Northeast. John's sound is described by Jazz Bassist Joe Fonda as "true lyrical poetry that is rooted in the blues and has a deep groove". The music is seamless and moves effortlessly between powerful testimonials of love and redemption and mournful ballads of regret and perseverance. John plays strictly acoustic music. It is clean, soulful and honest. John's music takes listeners on a journey they do not soon forget. Josh Hathaway of Blog Critics wrote that there is a truly unique quality to Scarpulla's music that honors blues, soul, pop and Americana at the same time. Scarpulla credits the longevity of the careers of his influences such as Van Morrison, Joe Cocker and Neil Young to their uncompromising honesty and individuality. Good music outlasts trends and maintains its integrity way after the sweet first bite of the flavor of the month.

Saratoga blues man Phil Drum often refers to Michael Eck as a "songster," a descendant of those street singers who had little regard for definitions of style, preferring instead to play all types of songs as long as they moved either the heart or the feet. Eck has certainly spent some time listening to the likes of Lead Belly, Skip James and Woody Guthrie but he's also dropped the needle on Joe Henry, Dave Alvin and Gillian Welch. If he is a songster, it's of a very contemporary stripe. As a songwriter, Eck does his best to fuse the drive and passion of those early greats with a modern lyrical sense all his own. He calls his thing "maximum solo acoustic" and it's maximum in every way, from his hulking frame and primal-folk bashing to his quiet country-tinged ballads. It's roots-rock that traces the bloodline from Blind Lemon Jefferson to Hank Williams, and from Tim Hardin to Tom Waits. In 1995, after years spent in too many hardcore, cowpunk and R&B bands to mention, Eck pulled out his battered old Martin D-18 and recorded his long-awaited debut album, "Cowboy Black" -- a direct to two-track collection of road-weary songs written in Texas and Louisiana. The album garnered plenty of critical acclaim and established Eck as a literate new force on the songwriting scene -- one influenced as much by Sam Shepard and Raymond Carver as by Johnny Cash and Townes Van Zandt.

Tern Rounders' music paints a richly varied landscape. From the rootsy vistas of fellow songwriter/musicians like Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, Emmylou Harris, Townes Van Zandt, to further down the coast to California, warping back to a time where Gram Parsons & The Burrito Bros. flew high over L.A. and the Buffalo Springfield still roamed.

The band has undergone quite a (r)evolution in its short lifespan, from its inception as an acoustic trio to its current electric four piece formation.  The vocal harmonies of Kim Noyes and Marc Clayton, who both play guitar, form the centerpiece of the band while drummer Jim Ketterer and bassist Harry Strole complete the Tern Rounders sound.

Tern Rounders has been promoting their debut album "A Different Land" at full tilt all summer, with live shows at such venues as Caffe' Lena and the Albany Public Library Garage.  The band founded and hosts a monthly "Moonlight Jamboree: Alt-country Roots Revue" the first Saturday of every month at the Bread and Jam Café in Cohoes - a series that highlights local talent in the folk-rock-country vein, with the goal of fostering a signature gathering place for the capital region's roots music community.

The Charlie Watts Riots are currently working on improving their web site, adding content, and getting their ducks in order. Quite honestly, they seem to be super excited to be playing together. The positive response they have received thus far from people close to them has been great. WEQX spins there their songs last during their local show and Exit 97.7 has been known to keep them playing throughout the day. The band is currently in the rehearsal/recording studio wiping up a batch of songs that they can't wait to show off to the world. They'll let CRUMBS and you know when get close to a release date for their local club debut. Until then catch them out at Valentines or maybe sneaking into another venue near you. For this episode we were greatly impress with the songs as the band has been sometimes deemed the loudest band in the area. The songs translated quite well to their acoustic version.

ThE BLiSTeRz are a three piece rock band hailing from Albany, NY. They are comprised of a loud mouth guitar player who loves power chords in the key of G, a reserved yet stylish bass player who blinks during photos and performs wizardry on the 4-string, and a thrashing beast on the drums, who breaks kick drums, sticks and ladies' hearts with reckless abandon! They are LOUD, they are FAST and they are INFECTIOUS!!! Their three-chord anthems will have you shouting along before the second chorus. Influenced by bands such as Social Distortion, The Clash, the Buzzcocks, and the Goo Goo Dolls their sound is a guitar driven fury, fueled with catchy lyrics and a thundering backbeat that brings you to your feet, throwing your fists in to the air. Come to a show and you may find yourself on stage with the boys singing back up or playing "BLiSTeRz Guitar Hero". It's always a party and nobody is safe. So run for cover because the fun is about to start!!!
